Weinviertler Advent
The cellar lanes and traditional locations are brightened by the lights of the Weinviertel Advent markets.
Focus on what is really important and enjoy the quietest time of the year. Sounds difficult? Not at all. At the Advent markets in the cellar lanes, visitors can still experience age-old authentic traditions.
The Weinviertler Advent doesn’t only create a festive atmosphere in the decorated cellar lanes, but also at the region’s historical places of interest. Many special traditions are kept alive in Weinviertel.
Advent in the cellar lane
In the run-up to Christmas, the picturesque cellar lanes in the Weinviertel, where the wine was once stored to mature, are transformed into Advent wonderlands. Tempting aromas waft from inside the wine cellars, drawing visitors into these underground spaces. Weinviertel mulled wine, bread with home-made spreads, bacon and meat, and delicious Weinviertler Weihnachtskrapferln cookies – a feast for the eyes as well as the mouth – provide a foretaste of the delicacies to come at Christmas. Enjoy wandering from cellar to cellar, tasting the wine at one and the home-made cookies at another, indulging in a slice of bread laden with dripping at one of the pressing houses, and getting lost in a fascinating conversation with the winegrower.
Local specialities, traditional handicrafts and authentic customs
Alongside the culinary delights, traditionally made handicrafts and beautiful gift ideas including candles, cribs, jewellery and painted ceramics are to be found. Local products such as honey, Lebkuchen gingerbread, game specialities, bacon and of course wines from the vineyards as well as home-distilled schnapps are always on offer – to take home or to taste there and then. The accompanying programme of cultural events is also traditional and festive, with Advent concerts and readings, crib scenes, Christmas songs, trumpeters and customs that are kept alive and authentic at the advent markets. And there are also activities for children: at many of the markets pony rides, arts and crafts and baking make it fun for the kids too.
